Here at CPCIDD, we are dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families. California stands out as the only state in the nation that guarantees services and supports for people with IDD through the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act (Lanterman Act). This landmark legislation ensures that individuals with IDD have the legal right to receive the necessary services and supports to live as independently and productively as possible within their communities.
To bring the Lanterman Act to life, the California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) collaborates with 21 Regional Centers across the state. These centers coordinate services and supports for over 400,000 individuals with IDD and their families, ensuring that each person’s unique needs are met.
Since the Lanterman Act was enacted in 1969, the landscape of services and supports for people with IDD has evolved significantly. The number of individuals served has grown, and the types of services provided have expanded to meet changing needs. Despite numerous amendments over the years, the core principle of the Lanterman Act remains unchanged: people with IDD and their families have the right to the services and supports they need to live fulfilling lives in their communities.
The policies affecting the IDD community are vast and varied, encompassing areas such as housing, employment, transportation, workforce development, rate reform, access to dental and health care, education, state budget, and public safety. These policies have a profound impact on the lives of individuals with IDD and their families.
At CPCIDD, we are committed to being a vital link between individuals with IDD, their families, advocates, experts, stakeholders, and the various branches of California’s government. We provide trusted policy insights and work to ensure that the voices of the IDD community are heard and their needs are met. Thank you for visiting our site and joining us in our mission to support inclusion and accessibility for all.
