DSP Workforce Crisis

The California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) serves over 458,000 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). However, a severe shortage of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) is hindering their ability to live full and independent lives.

This shortage, driven by low wages, staff burnout, high turnover, and inadequate training, limits opportunities for employment, housing, social activities, and community access for individuals with IDD.

Our report explores the impact of this crisis on individuals and families served under the Lanterman Act by DDS and the Regional Center System in California. The findings are based on surveys, focus groups, interviews, and existing data, providing a comprehensive look at the challenges and potential solutions.
