Supported Decision Making

At CPCIDD, we are committed to empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to exercise their agency and autonomy in decision-making through Supported Decision Making (SDM). We are honored to have been selected by the State Council on Developmental Disabilities as one of their grantees in support of their SDM-TAP program. To learn more, please visit the SDM-TAP website: https://scdd.ca.gov/sdm-tap

Supported Decision-Making (SDM) is a process that helps people make their own decisions with the support of trusted people that they choose. They can choose trusted people, like family members, friends, or other community members to be their supporters. Individuals have the legal right for chosen supporters to be present in meetings where decision making takes place, including Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings, legal hearings, and medical appointments.

Our initiative focuses on developing comprehensive training modules for the legal/judicial and financial sectors. These trainings will facilitate the implementation of SDM and help professionals recognize the capabilities of individuals with IDD when provided with appropriate support.
