Empowering Voices: Insights from the 28th Annual California Statewide Self-Advocacy Conference

We recently had the privilege of attending the Supported Life Institute’s 28th Annual California Statewide Self-Advocacy Conference in Sacramento. This vibrant event brought together a diverse and talented group of self-advocates, creating an inspiring atmosphere of learning, connection, and empowerment.

Learning from Self-Advocates

The conference provided a unique opportunity to learn directly from self-advocates. Their personal stories, resilience, and passion for change were both humbling and motivating. We engaged in meaningful conversations, gaining insights into their experiences and challenges. It was heartwarming to witness their commitment to making a difference in their communities.

Informative Presentations and Breakout Sessions

The conference agenda was packed with amazing, fun, and informative presentations. From workshops on self-advocacy skills to discussions about community inclusion, attendees had a wealth of knowledge at their fingertips. Breakout sessions covered topics like employment, healthcare, and education, ensuring a well-rounded experience for everyone.

Our Research Focus: The DSP Workforce Crisis.

While we soaked up the conference atmosphere, our primary purpose was to listen to the self-advocate community. They generously shared their voices by participating in a survey designed to address a critical issue: the direct support professional (DSP) workforce crisis. As individuals who rely on DSPs for essential support, their insights are invaluable.

Understanding the Impact

The survey, which is still live online, targets individuals served by regional centers. By asking specific questions, we aim to better understand how the DSP shortage affects people with disabilities. Our goal is that our research will inform policy recommendations, advocate for increased resources, and ultimately improve the quality of life for those who depend on DSPs.

Join the Conversation

We invite all self-avocates to join this important conversation. Visit our website to learn more about the survey and contribute your perspective. Together, we can create positive change and ensure that individuals with disabilities receive the support they deserve.
